IDC Profiles 10 Canadian Web 2.0 Companies to Watch
dthree named Web 2.0 company to watch
TORONTO, Canada, July 23rd, 2008 – A growing number of Canadian companies are boasting Web 2.0 solutions, from consumer-oriented websites that allow users to network with friends and share or create multimedia, to enterprise solutions that enhance collaboration among departments, partners, and customers.
IDC has released a new study that profiles ten of these emerging companies in Canada that offer Web 2.0 solutions worth watching. The IDC study, 10 Canadian Web 2.0 Companies to Watch (IDC #CA2TIW8), provides insight into the solutions, go-to-market strategies, partners, and customers of the profiled vendors. Lessons learned may provide a model for other emerging companies in the Canadian technology marketplace, and help larger vendors and investors identify partnership and investment opportunities.
"To succeed in the long term, companies will need to transition from providing "cool" Web-based solutions that users want to try, to "critical" tools they need to have," says Krista Collins, Analyst, Canadian ICT Innovation Export at IDC Canada. "To make this transition, companies need to clearly differentiate themselves from the plethora of other Web 2.0 solutions in the market, guide users through the adoption stage to help them immediately understand how the various features and functions relate to them, and develop strategies that give users compelling reasons to stay engaged over time." The analysis in this study provides valuable input to ICT vendors, large and small, to identify success factors employed by emerging Canadian vendors with solutions that address Web 2.0. Some of the key findings from this study include the following:
- The sheer number of startup Web 2.0 solutions in the market demands compelling value propositions and positioning, from industry specific solutions to unique partnerships that can increase functionality and visibility.
- Services that guide new customers through the adoption stage, from on-line guided tours to best practices and training, will help users understand and realize the full value of the offering.
- Retaining active users remains a key challenge, driving the need for strategies that not only attract users, but keep them engaged over the longer term.
The ten companies featured in the report include:
- AdHack (Vancouver)
- dthree Inc. (Mississauga)
- Octopz (Toronto)
- Overlay.TV (Ottawa)
- PlanetEye (Toronto)
- Ramius Corporation (Ottawa)
- SceneCaster (Richmond Hill)
- Standout Jobs (Montreal)
- Tomoye Corporation (Gatineau, Quebec)
- Tungle (Montreal)
